Once again the playstation 3 games console has been hacked. Japanese electronics giant Sony's reputation takes another hit.
This time the unknown hackers have managed to extract the new firmware version 3.70 security keys. As far as security breaches go this is once again a major blow to the antipiracy arm of Sony worldwide.
What Sony's response will be this time still remains to be seen but one things for sure for the time being the online side of the games will once more be invaded by the cheater and so called hackers. Still one things for sure sony will once again lock down access to PSN by most likely revoking the 3.70 keys and issuing new security keys with a mandetory firmware update.
What is the history of Playstation 3 and Xbox hacks? According to those responsible the exploit the have found is unpatchable by microsoft. Earlier model XBox consoles were also vunerable to the so called “jtag” hack but Microsoft have eliminated the ability to do this in all current models. Even so, the hacking scene behind the XBox360 seems relentless and have managed to appease the appetites of internet pirates worldwide through hardware modifications allowing them to play stolen titles.
As for Playstation 3 hacks, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has come out strong, stating that the security breach in the headlines a few months ago has been put in the past, and that the company is in a stronger position than before the incident.
This firm statement comes just months after the PlayStation Network (the online download shop for PS3 and PSP users to access free and premium content for games, videos, and interactive services) was temporarily shut down as a response to hackers stealing personal and financial details of users.
One of the most high profile hackers was geohot (George Hotz), who is famous for hacking the iPhone, allowing jailbraking and unlocking for use on other networks, though possibly even more high profile was his discovery of the master key for the Sony PS3 which allowed the side-loading of homebrew applications, which led to him being sued by Sony themselves.
In reference to the PS Vita release, pundits have opined, "The hacking community will be all over PS Vita from launch, so Sony has to ensure that its new handheld’s security is up to scratch. All the latest devices like the iPhone and iPad seem to get hacked eventually, but the longer Sony can delay a security breach the more successful Vita will be. If or when it does eventually get hacked, Sony then need to make sure that anyone trying to connect to PSN with a hacked console is banned and their device is somehow disabled. Sony needs to be as severe as possible in this area because piracy ultimately hurts us gamers, and the last thing we want to happen is for great software for the Vita to dry up like it did on PSP."
When a recent survey asked a large percentage of consumers if they had lost faith in Sony since the PSN data breach, the consensus was well and truly NO. A huge 59% of those surveyed said they would stick with the company and opinions were very definite that if banks, governments and even FBI networks get hacked it seems unfair to single out Sony as being a bungling incompetent company.
The Sony PlayStation 3 has been one of the most popular game consoles since its first version release and has been acknowledged as one of the highest selling video game consoles in the world, so it is no wonder that gamers are keeping the faith with Sony, all-be-it that the breach took them away from online gaming for some time.
