Working in the food service industry is a fun but challenging job. You are constantly moving, interacting with a wide variety of people, overcoming new and unique obstacles, and learning new things every single day. While it can be a lot of fun, it can also be ridiculously stressful and difficult. The following tips should help those who are interested in these fun and exciting careers.
First you have to look at your job professionally. You are going to get rude customers, angry people, and nasty attitudes. Its just part of the human condition, and whenever you interact with lots of people, you are eventually going to run into the less friendly types.
What you have to remember is that the rude comments and nasty attitude are not directed at you. They are directed at the mask, the persona of "professional" which you wear over your real identity. This is a way of protecting yourself from hurtful comments and gestures. By being professional, you can let the mask take all of the dings and dents that come with working with unsavory people, leaving your real personality intact beneath.
Another issue in the food service industry is personal hygiene. People can get rather particular with the environment their food is being served in. Being the face of the establishment, you have to present yourself in the most neat and respectable way possible. This involves wearing clean clothes, being shaven and or having your hair done up nice, and always trying to look your very best.
It gets very warm in kitchens, and most restaurants and bars are kept at a toasty temperature. For patrons this is fine because they are just sitting there calmly enjoying a meal. However for wait staff rushing around to do a million things, it can get a little swampy.
You always want to make sure to wear and undershirt, and to have a couple of extra undershirts available in case you get sweaty. You should also put on a copious amount of under arm deodorant. Make sure to get a deodorant which is both scented, and an anti-perspirant. If you sweat copiously, you may want to consider using a hanky to keep yourself looking fresh.
Food service is all about being professional. You want people to see an image of perfection when they look at you. Hide your vulnerabilities behind a mask, and just roll with the punches.
Small and Large Kitchen Tables...
A kitchen table can serve a variety of functions. First and most obviously, it is an extra surface where you can extend your culinary work, using it for chopping, mixing, and even just spreading out the various utensils you will use in the course of food preparation.
However perhaps even more important, a kitchen table is a place for people to gather. It is a central location, where friends and family can come and sit, enjoying one another company amongst the fresh aromas and warm sensations of the kitchen. It's a social piece that makes the entire space more inviting and friendly.
The size, shape, and nature of any table that you bring into the kitchen will be determined by the space available in the room. If your kitchen is expansive, you will of course have a lot more options. However if room is tight, you will have to choose a table that fits into the extra space available.
In general a round table will take up less space than a square one. Round tables don't have corners jutting out in all directions. However, if you have a free ninety degree corner in the kitchen, then a square table may be more appropriate, as it will be able to jut up perfectly into that corner.
One thing you have to be careful of is to not use a table which takes up too much floor space. It is important that the kitchen flows, and that you are able to move freely throughout the space, to be able to do the culinary work that needs to be accomplished.
If space is limited, you might want to go with a small bistro table, or even a wall counter, rather than a full out table. These are smaller pieces that can be pushed to the side, leaving plenty of room to work throughout the space.
In a pinch, you always have the option of going with a temporary table. Folding tables, or even pieces with a fold out leaf, allow you to suit the room to the occasion, taking up as much space as you want, and then folding them away when its time to turn your kitchen back into a work space.
A kitchen table is a wonderful accessory that gives you more room to work, and invites social gatherings to take place within the kitchen area. However you have to be sure to match the size and shape of the table to the room that you have available.
