Reasons You Should Move To The Philippines

Why you should move to the Philippines or retire in the Philippines...

I’ve known people,  married to two actually, that would plan forever.  Making lists, taking notes, collecting data and doing research...  But some people use that as a means to putting things off.  They both really believed they were making progress but they could never move from the planning stage to doing stage.

I think some people planning to move to the Philippines are doing the same thing.  Others are either emotionally ready or intellectually ready but not both.  Some just need more time.  I think I was in the need more time category for a little while.  On the other hand, if I had good information on why to move,  I might have sped things up a lot.

For me, medical care was an issue.  I didn’t know how the system worked.

If I had known that I could get most of my medications without a prescription, I would have been here sooner!

I also would have saved about $200 as I shipped some medication ahead of my arrival via UPS and that cost me $200.00

Even after I got here, I kept shipping medication to myself which cost me around $50.00 in shipping each month.  I wouldn’t have done that if I had known I didn’t need a prescription.  A doctor visit here will cost you about $12.00 and that’s for an appointment at a private hospital.  At a public hospital the cost would be closer to $8.00.

If I had known how to get my things here, that would have helped me come sooner and save a lot of money.  I spent a lot of money moving things to another city in the US.  If I had that to do over again, I would have sold what I could and shipped the rest to the Philippines.

If I had known I could get a really nice home in the Philippines for $300 a month and a furnished apartment for a bit more.  If I had gone for a smaller unfurnished place, I could get a place for less than $200.  Depending on how large, it could be as cheap as $100 a month.

If I had understood that I could stay here long term without any thing more than my passport, I might have come sooner.  You can enter with a US passport (or Canadian or British or European) and stay for up to two years by getting extensions every two months.  Though you’ll need to get your first extension within a few weeks.  I don’t recall the exact time on that.

If I had known how the women of the Philippines would be crazy about me, I might have come sooner.  It really helps though if you can meet and become close to someone before you get here...

Treasure of Asia:  The Filipina

The Filipina, also known as a bebot in Tagalog,  or dai in Cebuano -- in other languages for younger Filipina or women of the Philippines.   She is something you must experience to understand.  And like any other human, she is complex and no two are just alike.  Any time you start trying to describe a whole class of women in a country, you risk being labeled as stereo typing.

I’ve only begun to understand the Philippines and the Filipino, whether it be pinoy (male) or pinay (female) but I feel like I’ve come to understand Filipina better than I have pinoy.  Probably because I’m far more interested in Filipina!

Much about the Filipina woman will be  determined from being poor.  Not all Filipina are poor but more are poor than not poor.  If a single mother can find a job, it is unlikely she makes $200 a month.  Most cannot find work at all.  Unless  you are working by the age of 25, it is unlikely you will work for someone else.  Though many women find ways to start their own businesses.

Quiet Strength

There is a calm about the Philippines, well outside of the traffic but then, Filipino blow their horns in politeness rather than rudeness most of the time.  Filipino blow their horn usually to let you know they are there butyes, sometimes to show disgust too.

Filipina are the epitome of calmness.  Oh they can get upset, I’ve seen a couple of Filipina draw a lot of attention to themselves when they were in public.  Jessie tells me that a display of temper is not an unusual thing, but my guess is that happens within family situations.  I have yet to see any Filipino getting upset in a business.

When a dispute arises with a Filipina, they talk and ask questions and then walk away calmly.  Jessie has several times delivered news to me that made me want to go through the roof!  She would talk to the business person, in a very calm way.  There would be smiles and I would think all is worked out.  Then she would turn to me and tell me something that my western ears found next to impossible to believe.

Filipina women are almost always polite but don’t take their silence as quiet agreement.  They may choose not to argue but rather wait until the matter becomes important and something they must deal with.

Simple Filipina Beauty

Before coming here, I met a girl online and she started her webcam.  I told her she was very pretty and she said no, "Its simple Filipina beauty."  I thought for a minute and I said something like, you know, you are right.  But I don’t know if I could call it simple any more and in person their beauty takes on a sensuality that is just not likely to come across online, no matter what she does.

This so called simple Filipina beauty is enough to drive a mere man into a frenzy.  When you are here and you see thousands of Filipina and watch thousands of them walk, expect to be driven slightly insane as this beauty is not simple at all.  The hottie Filipina is a common sight.

The Filipina girl is enchanting, magical and will help make your life be all it could want it to be.  If you treat her good, she will be good to you, loyal to you and do everything she can to please you.  Respect her, and she will love you.

Rizal Park - A Memorial For One Of The Philippines' Most Beloved Sons

Rizal Park is an urban oasis at the heart of Manila's bustling business centre. Found next to the famous fortification of the Intramuros, the tranquil and picturesque retreat overlooking the silver-tipped seascape of Manila Bay was created as a tribute to one of the Philippines' most beloved and valiant sons, freedom fighter Jose Rizal.

A doctor by vocation and a celebrated novelist, Rizal was one of the leading figures in the Filipino independence movement against the Spanish colonists. Tragically, he was executed by the Spanish in 1896 after the government charged him with aiding rebel uprisings against the state. Although it would be many decades before the Philippines broke free of both the Spanish and the American occupation that followed, Jose Rizal remains one of the most influential figures in the history of the country. This status is amply reflected in the prestige and importance attached to the park opened in his name, which contains a memorial erected upon the very site of his execution by firing squad.

The renowned beauty and dignity of the park's environs seem to be a testament to the noble blood that was once spilled on these grounds so tragically. It is peppered with exotic, carefully landscaped gardens, memorials and historical markers as well as numerous entertainment and exhibition venues. The bronze monument to Rizal that was put up in 1913 is situated at the centre of the landscape. Marking the actual execution site, many celebrations of national significance are held in front of the monument, which routinely features as a part of foreign and state dignitaries' visiting schedules. The monument is flanked by an honour guard 24 hours a day and inscribed behind it is Rizal's famous poem "Mi Ultimo Adios".

Beside the monument is a 31 meter high flagpole which locals call the kilometer zone as it is the point from which the distances of all the other townships and cities of the Philippines are measured. A poignant, life-size diorama show replaying Rizal's final hours and execution is found in the Light and Sound complex on the northern side of the park, serving as a "living" memorial to the fallen hero. Beside this is found the Rizal fountain, the Rizal mural and the Gomburza marker, a memorial to three Filipino priests executed by the Spanish.

The park comprises of three sections: the Agrifiana Circle, the park proper and the section of open field over Roxas Boulevard along Manila Bay. Apart from being the grounds housing the National Historical Institute, Planetarium and the National Library, there are many other vastly popular establishments within the park, such as the environmental gallery of Artist's Haven, the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, and the Rizal Park and MassCom Libraries. However, the most scenic venues are indubitably the Orchidarium, which showcases a collection of the most beautiful and exotic blooms from around the world, and the Butterfly Pavilion. The twin Greek classical buildings that house the country's Tourism and Finance Departments also serve as an ideal backdrop for photography enthusiasts.

Although the charms of the park described here are only the tip of the iceberg, visitors to Manila have ample opportunity to explore its various facilities and sights at length, especially if they elect to find Manila accommodation in the city centre. Manila apartments are an increasingly popular alternative to hotels, and Somerset Olympia is one of the most recommended choices for luxury serviced accommodation for business and leisure travellers to the Philippine capital.

Explore the Philippines Diving Delight at Malapascua Island

As a tourist destination, the Philippines do not automatically spring to the holiday-maker's mind. And yet, this tropical archipelago offers a myriad of as-yet undiscovered adventures; from the ravishing reefs hiding wrecked Spanish galleons in their sea bed, to jungles abounding in exotic flora and fauna, to exciting geological formations and volcanoes. This natural paradise has tragically been subject to much political and natural upheaval over the years, from which it is still recovering. As such, the lack of a tourist boom is actually beneficial to the country as a whole while providing a vista of opportunities for the discerning tourist eager to explore destinations off the beaten track.

Malapascua Island is one such gem in the rough, especially for diving enthusiasts. The little island is located at the northern tip of Cebu Island, in the middle of the Visayan Sea. It is a very small and compact little bit of land, being only 2.5 km long and 1 km wide, but it is fast becoming the premier diving destination of the Philippines. The island's Bounty Beach is a sprawling stretch of powdery white sand surrounded with beautiful reefs that tinge its seas in luminescent aquamarine. It is famous for its diving spot of Monad Shoal, which is an underwater plateau, frequented by the rarely sighted thresher sharks and manta rays. The island also has three ancient ship wrecks which adventurous divers can explore for buried treasure. Many diving shops have sprung up around this area, providing excellent facilities for divers.

The resorts of this charming little isle meld seamlessly into the local settlement of eight hamlets, without despoiling its culture or ambience. The people largely thrive on tourism and fishing and are friendly enough to invite visitors to engage in their village sports and festivities. It would be well for visitors to repay their hospitality by respecting local modesty and customs; skimpy bikinis and topless sunbathing for females would be insensitive toward the conservative locals who are still adapting to foreign intrusion on their traditional home.

National Museum of the Philippines - A Place Where History is brought to life

Vibrant, colorful, discordant; Manila has grow up to have its own unique stamp on a country that is also growing in leaps and bounds. The veritable energy of Philippines, this is where people come to enjoy, relax and let their hair down. Instead of neatly lined streets and picture perfect houses, a visitor to Manila will initially confused by the lack of symmetry in this atmospheric city. But slowly, the authentic charms of a city that has known the flavors of many lands will charm the unwary traveler into loving its slightly off-beat sense of life.

For a nation where its history is tragic, there is unfortunately very little remaining of its great legacy, which is why the National Museum of Philippines is seen as a cultural lifeline. A city where art galleries dominate the popularity contest over museums, the museum fought hard to find a place in the city's folds. The present building was designed in 1918 and was established as the ethnography and natural history museum in 1901.

Much like the city itself, the national museum houses a mixture of culturally diverse exhibits. Owning to the conquests of Southeast Asia and at present to the influence of countries like Australia, Japan, Middle East and Nigerians among others, Philippines have assimilated many of their cultural elements, and it shows in many of the pieces the museum has on show. The 'piece the résistance' among the pre-historic artifacts and primitive tools that call the museum their home in the renowned collection called the "San Diego". It's a galleon that has changed many hands in trade and has a history as bloody as the city it now rests in. Apart from this, Juan Luna's famous painting "Spolarium" takes center stage; hanging as it does in the main gallery on the ground floor. These are only a few of the many expositions of great value exhibited in the museum. To fully experience the true grace of the city, a visit henceforth is well recommended.

Discovering Manila’s Top 5 Tourist Hotspots

Although the Philippines is known as an Asian paradise laden with sandy beaches and its fair share of intriguing attractions, Manila is an often forgotten metropolis in the tourist landscape of the country. Brimming with touristic possibilities and a host of curious and engaging attractions, more and more visitors are discovering that the capital city they first land in upon entering the nation is just as captivating as the pastoral landscapes of the nation's more frequented countryside and beach shores.

One of Manila's best kept secrets is of course the historic district known as Intramuros. Situated along the banks of Pasig River the district is notably the most ancient and most historic region of Manila dating back to the Spanish occupation of the Philippines. Lined with exquisite Spanish structures that were constructed in the period the area also contains several fortified towers, defensive structures and bulwarks of the colonial age. With names such as Baluarte de San Gabriel, Puerta Real, and Baluarte de San Diego the buildings hark back to a bygone era when the ancient edifices of Intramuros Palacio de Gobernador, Manila Cathedral and the statue of Queen Isabella II, Casa Manila were also constructed.

Fort Santiago is another must-see attraction in the capital as it is the revered site that witnessed the imprisonment and eventual execution of Jose Rizal. Metallic footsteps from Rizal's prison cell to Luneta are also placed within the venue in memory of the heavy steps the national hero took on the morning of his demise. Other highlights at the fort include prisons, dungeons, ruins and a museum dedicated to Rizal. Used as a fortress by the Japanese, Spanish and subsequently the Americans, this historic site is one of the city's most popular tourist hotspots.

Situated next to the fort lies Rizal Park which secures a prime location in the heart of Manila overlooking scenic Marina Bay. A host of recreation facilities such as a chess plaza, Japanese garden, Chinese garden, a massive stadium, food stalls, a light and sound theatre and a playground are also available at the venue. An amphitheatre and several fountains are also located within the sprawling parkland which also houses the national museum of Philippines and the Rizal monument.

Another point of interest in Manila is holy Quiapo Church at Plaza Miranda which is the home of the Black Nazarene. This holy figure is paraded through the streets each year in a religious festival that sees the faithful flock in an emotional scene to escort the Nazarene in the procession.

Finally shoppers who wish to clock in some hours of retail therapy in Manila can head down to the Ortigas Center where a majority of the city's finest malls are concentrated although die-hard local market fans can venture down Quiapo, Divisoria and Baclaran for an authentic Philippine thoroughfare experience.

Explore the Many Attractions of Las Pinas!

One of the most preferred travel destinations in Southeast Asia, the Philippines is made up of a remarkable collection of islands. Home to some of the world's most abundant coral-rich waters, there is much to explore in this country. Blessed with a number of natural wonders, the Philippines is an ideal destination for the diving enthusiast who enjoys exploring the depths of the ocean in search of amazing discoveries in the shape of spectacular coral reefs, beautiful fish and shipwrecks. In addition to all these offerings, the country is also one of the friendliest places to visit and gives the visitor a chance to sample the delectable local cuisine as well.

Located in an area of the Philippines which is known as the National Capital Region, Las Pinas is a relatively small city. Since its humble beginnings during the Spanish Era as a small fishing town, the city is has evolved into one of the most important suburbs in Metro Manila. One of the city's most famous draws is the St. Joseph Church of the Parish of Las Pinas, which is home to the world's only Bamboo Organ. This fascinating musical instrument was pieced together in 1824. Unlike any other in the world, this fascinating masterpiece was created with the use of wood, metal and bamboo. Fr. Diego Cera assembled this piano, which later received much recognition for the amazing melodies it produced.

Although the Salt Beds of Las Pinas were severely affected by development projects which took place in the Manila Bay area, they were later restored, offering the traveler the chance to witness where and how salt production in Philippines takes place.

If you're looking for a place to enjoy a satisfactory meal while in Philippines, there are a few great eateries that come to mind. Barrio Fiesta Restaurant, Dencio's Bar and Grill and Ted's La Paz Batchoy are but a few of the choices on offer.

Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) - A Celebration of Worship, Food, Fireworks & Light

The Bangkok Moon Festival also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival is a celebration carried out by the traditional Chinese people who celebrate the harvest and worship the moon. The festival that comes alive during the 15th day of the eighth month of September or October according to the Chinese calendar is a fascinating spectacle.

The Moon Festival also known as the Mooncake Festival or the Lantern Festival has more than just Bangkok devotees; the Chinese, Koreans, Vietnamese and Japanese celebrate this festival in their own way on the same days. The festival has participants in the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia as well.

Being one of the most important events in Chinese culture this celebration is more than just a festival to the Chinese people, it's a celebration of offerings to the moon on that clear night. Legend has it that years ago Chang-Ngo who is now known and regarded as the goddess of the moon flew to the moon and never returned.

The Moon Festival is destined to bring you happiness, a perfect occasion for family gatherings and a legend to cling to.

SM Mall of Asia - A Tourist Destination Not to Be Overlooked

There is no one word that can describe the so called city of Manila. Because of its constant expansion and development it seems as if this city without a center is constantly changing face. But whatever the adjective used, be it earnest, casual, jovial or laid-back, it can be assured that the teeming and lively atmosphere of Manila transcends any pretense of being boring or conforming.

The SM Mall of Asia is one such feature that epitomizes the vibe of Manila. Touted as being more than just a mall, this gigantic structure combines four hectares of floor space with a length of just under one kilometer and a perimeter of two kilometers. Two of the four buildings that make up the mall are taken up by massive car parks, and the other two houses the Main Mall and Entertainment Mall respectively. It is the biggest mall that Philippines have to offer, while holding the title of being the third largest in the world. It has been described by many as a leisure, shopping and entertainment destination that should not be over looked.

There is no shortage of shops within this monstrous complex. With over 600 shops to choose from it will certainly not be a disappointing experience. Being a typical mall, the SM Mall has the usual department stores, appliance center, hypermarket, restaurants as well as a massive food court. With a range that spans from clothes, jewelers, toys, hardware to home appliances, this mall goes one step further with an inbuilt cinema complex as well as its very own Ice Skating rink. The capacity of the building ensures that even if shopping is not your thing, you will need at least two days to cover the entire mall.

When looking for a place to stay it's best to choose a Manila luxury hotel. Providing above par service and luxurious accommodation the Edsa Shangri-La Manila is a hotel that can be recommended without second thought. Set in lush tropical gardens, this veritable Eden has exceptional facilities and lavishly furnished amenities that is the trademark of many luxury accommodation Manila .
